You Must Understand This:
1. Chiropractic is not a cure for any condition.
2. Chiropractic simply improves spinal function.
3. Improving spinal function, positively impacts the nervous system. As a result, the body may heal in ways beyond expectation.
Some Chiropractic Vocabulary Definitions: (as defined by the World Health Organization)
A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation, with a particular focus on subluxations.
A lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity, which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity. (note: This definition is different from the current medical definition, in which subluxation is a significant structural displacement, and therefore visible on static imaging studies)
• Starts with a Discussion:
The chiropractor will read what you have written on your new patient form, then ask questions to help clarify their understanding of your concern.
Our experienced chiropractors pride themselves on thorough assessments to inform you what the cause of your problem is.
We may advise that spinal XRays or other imaging such as MRI or CT (CAT) scan should be performed to further assess your concern.
(this may be discussed on your second visit, if we are waiting for results of other tests, such as XRays, or if your case is complex and requires the chiropractor to take more time to think your case through)
If we believe that the cause of your problem is best cared for by another health professional, we will guide you in the right direction.
If we believe that your goals can be achieved with chiropractic care, we will then give you our best recommendation (the same recommendation we would give to our own family member if in the same shoes as you) as to how we should proceed - meaning, how many chiropractic appointments you may need to see improvements.
SUBSEQUENT CHIROPRACTIC VISITS
Once a plan has been made to achieve your health goals, the following visits are much shorter in time, as the sole task to perform is the chiropractic adjustments (the term used to realign the joints of the spine) specific to you.
Following the discussed and predetermined number of chiropractic visits, your chiropractor will perform progress assessments at no extra cost. This is so we know how far you have come from the starting point to present. And also to know how far we have yet to go to achieve your goal. Also, it is the time for the chiropractor to discover if you are ready to change the frequency of your care, and perhaps time to introduce or change rehabilitation exercises.
Afraid of Seeing a Chiropractor?
We’ve had many patients in your shoes before! Be assured that on your first visit, the goal is to find out the cause of your problem. Once it’s been explained to you, and the best course of action recommended, then you are in control of deciding if you would like to follow through and get your first adjustment and be on your way to recovery.
Our chiropractors use a variety of techniques including hands-on techniques (from firm to very gentle - suitable for infants), to using tools such as SOT wedge blocks, and Activator (‘clicky’ tool).
Don’t hesitate to call our office to ask questions, if you prefer we can have one of our chiropractors speak with you over the phone before coming in.
