Breastfeeding can be complex, and there are many reasons why a baby may experience difficulty feeding comfortably or effectively.

Tongue tie, or restricted movement of the tongue, may be one factor considered when feeding difficulties are present. Babies can also experience differences in jaw, neck or body movement that may be relevant to their overall comfort and positioning during feeding.

Chiropractic care does not release or correct a tongue tie. Our role is to assess your baby’s musculoskeletal system and determine whether there are findings within our scope of practice that may warrant care.

Where breastfeeding difficulties are the primary concern, we may also recommend assessment by an appropriately qualified health professional, such as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), midwife, GP, paediatric health professional, dentist or other practitioner involved in infant feeding care.

What happens at the first visit?

Your first appointment is focused on understanding what is happening for both you and your baby.

This may include:

  • A detailed history
We will discuss your baby’s birth, general health, development and feeding history, as well as any concerns you have noticed.

  • A gentle physical assessment
Where appropriate, we may assess your baby’s movement and musculoskeletal function, including the neck and jaw, to identify any areas that require further consideration.

  • A discussion of our findings
We will explain what we have observed and whether chiropractic care is appropriate. If your concerns would be better addressed by another health professional, we will discuss this with you and recommend referral where appropriate.

  • A clear plan
If chiropractic care is considered appropriate, we will explain the proposed approach, answer your questions and obtain your consent before proceeding.

What does chiropractic care for a baby involve?

Techniques used with babies are modified for their age, size and stage of development.

Care is gentle, and the techniques used are different from those commonly associated with adult chiropractic care. Your chiropractor will explain what they are proposing before any examination or treatment takes place.

You are welcome to ask questions at any stage, and nothing will be done without your consent.

Working together

Breastfeeding difficulties can have many contributing factors, and chiropractic care is not intended to replace appropriate assessment and support for feeding concerns.

We work alongside a network of health professionals with experience in different aspects of infant feeding and oral function, including lactation consultants, midwives, dentists and orofacial myologists.

Where appropriate, we can help you determine which type of practitioner may be best placed to assist with your concerns.

Our chiropractors have undertaken training in working with infants and children and take an individual, gentle and considered approach to care.

Have questions before making an appointment?

Please contact our clinic. We are happy to discuss your concerns and help you determine whether an appointment with one of our chiropractors - or another health professional - may be the most appropriate next step.
