Parents are often surprised to learn just how different chiropractic care for babies and children is from the techniques commonly associated with adult chiropractic care.
One of the questions we hear most often is:
“How do you do chiropractic on a baby?”
Very gently.
Techniques used with infants and young children are modified specifically for their age, size and stage of development. There is no forceful twisting or “cracking”. When hands-on care is appropriate, very light and specific pressure is used.
A simple way we often describe the amount of pressure is similar to the pressure you might use when checking whether a tomato is ripe.
Why do parents bring their children to a chiropractor?
Parents may choose to have their baby or child assessed for many different reasons.
Sometimes they have noticed that their baby seems uncomfortable or unsettled. Sometimes they have questions about movement, posture or physical tension. Other families simply want another perspective on how their child’s musculoskeletal system is developing.
Birth, growth and childhood all place different physical demands on the body, and every child is different.
Our role is to listen carefully to your concerns, assess your child and determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate.
We will also let you know if we believe your child would be better assessed by their GP, paediatrician or another health professional.
What happens at the first appointment?
Your child’s first appointment begins with a thorough history and age-appropriate examination.
We take the time to understand:
* your pregnancy and birth history where relevant
* your child’s health and development
* any concerns you have noticed
* movement, posture and musculoskeletal function
* whether there are any reasons chiropractic care may not be appropriate
We will explain what we find, answer your questions and discuss any recommended care before proceeding.
Nothing is done without your consent.
Our chiropractors have undertaken additional training in paediatric chiropractic care and understand that working with babies and children requires a gentle, considered and individual approach.
Our priority is always the comfort, safety and wellbeing of your child.
